Way to go Pete! Just flipped to the evening news and I see your face.
The two activities that I always associate with you is service to others and of course, biking. Now you get to combine both! This is really cool. When you get back, I’ll take you out for that long overdue lunch

Peter-
Sorry I couldn’t be there to see you off! But from the pictures it looks like you were in good company.
Thanks for sharing your story with the WRC; what an inspiration you are to so many people. Have an amazing time and try not to think about what you’re missing here, i.e., Rich’s songs, Tracy’s magnets, Jeremy’s Mr. Bean videos, Teri’s bowling shoes, and so on…they’ll all be here when you come back.

Pete,
Sorry I could not be there to celebrate such an inspiring occasion. I was actually at Zion’s National Park and probably passed you on the way home. It is chilly in southern and central Utah right now so bundle up!
I wish you the best of luck on your upcoming adventures. What you are doing is truly inspiring; not only to people with Diabetes, but to everyone.
We miss you around here and look forward to welcoming you back! (Don’t worry about missing us though…You shouldn’t miss work when you are having the time of your life)

Even though we didn’t get to see you drive off Pat - we are very proud of you too (and what a cool minivan)! What an adventure. Thanks for bringing us along! We will put up the Pete wall tomorrow in the first grade classroom. We have some cute pictures from the send off! Take care and stay warm.
March 26th, 2006 at 12:02 am
Congratulations on proving to the world that people with diabetes can do anything. I’ll be checking your bicycling adventure online, and will be sure to share your journey with anyone else I know in the diabetes community.

Hi Pete and Pat, thanks for the site, it’s been fun watching your trip.
And stick a piece of glass (and/or shreaded tire) and that dead battery in a jar along with the other trip nuisances. They’ll be fun to laugh at in a few years.
March 30th, 2006 at 4:50 pm
Thanks so much Pete for answering the questions for the first graders. The questions are so cute and your answers are wonderful! I’m excited to go tomorrow morning and share the updates with the class. What a fun project I get to work on. You guys are amazing! Thank you thank you!

Sorry I missed your send off - we have been tracking your progress and Shulick is especially proud of you. I especially liked Day 9 ~ the ‘rough day at the office’. We do miss you here - but am glad that you are living this dream for all of us!! Take care and happy trails (or should I say roads). Pat - some advice I will pass on from my 3 year old son Peter - ‘keep both hands on the wheel so the car doesn’t get an owie’ — keep up the great driving - cool stickers on the van!!

Peter, it was nice to meet you and have the short visit we had. I hope the haircut is okay. (less wind resistence) I’m home for lunch, just took about a 2 mile walk jog. I hope the map helped, or if you stayed on course you have made it through the hills and curves. I will keep up on your trip, and again it was very nice to meet you. The Barber Clif

Hi Pete!
Just read about your journey in the”Quarterly”. Wish I had known about it earlier–I would have been honored to welcome you to Durango and maybe have ridden a few miles with you.
I was diagnosed Type I in 1986 and have kept active by biking, hiking, running, x-country skiing, etc., but obviously nothing as ambitious as your trip.
Just wanted to say congratulations and keep up the good work from a fellow Gustie, and thank you for the inspiration to keep pushing the limits.
Good luck and Ride On!

My Mom sent me a copy of the article in the paper and I have been following your journey for the last few weeks. I am so impressed that you are doing this ride and are working to educate others about diabetes. You were the first friend with diabetes that I knew as kid, and you were teaching me stuff then! You’ve come a long way, Peter.
May you be blessed with wide shoulders, great scenery, and tail winds for the rest of your ride!

Wow! Just ran across the Bayer Dream Fund site and linked to your ride. My jaw drops in awe at what you have completed and are accomplishing! Your log and pictures awakens the desire in me to tour our beautiful country - don’t think I’d do it by bicycle tho, I’ll leave that to you. You truly are an inspiration, the best to you and Pat on your journey and may God bless you both. Good luck from Illinois!

Hi Pete,
We know your relatives in Goshen, IN: Leonard & Nell Hoogenboom.
Nell told us what you are doing because she knows how much we
love to ride. We’ll be in Fort Wayne today … I see you will, too!
We hear you’ll be at Bayer in Elkhart, too - that’s 15 min. from where
we live. We’ll keep a watch out for you!

Don’t know if you rememeber me, we spoke at the Bayer Tarrytown facility when you visited in June. I’m the one that asked you a million questions, one of which was, what next? I know, premature. I’m sure you will want to finish your tour and rest up a bit before your next adventure. You did mention hiking the AT though. I’ll be taking a couple of weeks off in early October to hike the 150 mile section of Vermont. If you ever get the opportunity to do the whole thing or just section hike like me give me a shout. I can always find a couple of weeks to hit the trail and I know the New England section well.
Between you and Floyd Landis, I’m inspired to spend more time on my bike and it’s a better way to keep cool than hiking the trails in the middle of summer. With the hills around here I need to loose a few pounds though
before I become a better climber. After 30-40 miles I’m wiped out. I don’t think I could handle the Alps (on bike anyway).
Good luck and remember to have fun because you never know when you will have to go back to work.

Pete,
Heard about your ride from my brother, John. Am here in SLC visiting he and his family, and attending friend’s daughter’s wedding at Alta on Saturday–Renae Power marrying Craig Patterson. Use to come out every year with my son, Pete. Now he is married and a teacher. Was a physician, but now on disability cuz of narcolepsy and heart disease. Have Type 2 DM myself. Did not realize your history of DM. Am proud of you and your accomplishment. Way to go. An inspiration to all diabetics and what can be accomplished if you work with someone. Your history of rebellion is all too common. You may be able to help and reach out to a number of bitter young diabetics.

Looks like you’ll be back soon.
First thing I thought when I saw the dusting of snow on the mountains today was how you’re doing. Sure enough you had a snow report.
I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that the warm weather comes back and welcomes you the rest of the way!
Great Job!
